Ronda Rousey is making her return to the UFC Octagon after losing for the first time in her professional mixed martial arts career.
Rousey had to swallow the bitter taste of defeat just over a year ago when Holly Holm shocked the world and defeated Rousey by knockout in their championship title fight at UFC 193 in November 2015.
Going into UFC 207 with her shot at getting back the UFC women’s bantamweight title against the current champion Amanda Nunes, Rousey has gone on a media blackout, not giving much of her time to the media that she feels turned on her when she lost against Holm. Rousey has stated that she was upset that she gave up so much of her time to the media and the media was so quick to expose her after her loss.
UFC commentator Joe Rogan spoke with Brendan Schaub and Eddie Bravo on his Joe Rogan Experience podcast about Rousey’s choice to avoid the media going into UFC 207, which in turn is also having an effect on Nunes.
“The good news is, she can concentrate on the fight and just concentrate on the fight,” Rogan said of Amanda Nunes who is the champion but isn’t getting the big promotion behind the biggest fight of her career. “The good news for Ronda, she can also just concentrate on the fight. She doesn’t have to do any of these interviews. I like that.
“What I don’t like is, I feel like we have to respect what a champion is. And, it doesn’t matter if you’re the most famous person, you’re still the champion. When you’re the champion of a giant organization like the UFC and she’s the first openly gay women’s MMA champion ever, or any MMA champion. There’s never been an openly gay MMA champion. And, she’s f***ing bad ass.”
Rogan went on to talk about the promotion for the fight relying heavily on one person, being Rousey.
“To concentrate only on one person to sell it, I understand that person is huge. I understand that person is the biggest person, she’s probably right up there with Conor. I would go they both go back and forth.”
Schaub said that the stats say that McGregor is the bigger star and Rogan agreed saying that he would lean towards McGregor as well.
“My point is, with one victory, she could get launched right into that place again.”
What are your thoughts on Ronda Rousey’s media blackout going into UFC 207? Will the lack of promotion involing Rousey have an effect on the amount of fans tuning in? Sound off in the comments!
