VIDEO | Jon Jones gives update on possible Brock Lesnar super fight
Late last month, in the main event of UFC 214, UFC light heavyweight great and pound-for-pound mainstay Jon Jones returned to the cage after more than a year on the shelf. He did so against reigning light heavyweight champ Daniel Cormier, and despite his layoff, won the fight by knockout in the third round to reclaim the UFC light heavyweight crown.
Post-fight, Jones re-upped on his recent calls for a fight with former UFC heavyweight king and long-time WWE superstar Brock Lesnar.
If I am going to sacrifice being the smaller guy, I think that stylistically Brock Lesnar would be a fight that makes way more sense,” Jones told the media after UFC 214. “And the payday would be tremendous! Plus what it would do for our sport would be tremendous. It would have a much greater effect (than a fight with champion Stipe Miocic). So for those reasons, a Brock Lesnar fight just makes way more sense for me.”
While Jones seemed to be dialled-in on a battle with Lesnar, however, Lesnar is still mid-way through a USADA-administered suspension stemming from a July 2016 bout with Mark Hunt. As such, this bout is likely to take some time to put together – something Jones now seems to understand. Speaking on Good Morning America, Jones gave an update on the Lesnar fight, and explained that he’s awaiting a call from the UFC regarding his next fight.
“It may be awhile before Brock Lesnar is eligible to fight,” he said. “Right now I’m just waiting to hear from the UFC on some different ideas outside of him.”
