VIDEO | Jon Jones: ‘I could never fight again and get put in the Hall of Fame’

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones holds the title as the youngest fighter to become a UFC champion.

At the age of 23, Jones stepped up to fight the champion at the time, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua on short notice and finished Rua by TKO in the third round. Jones would go on to defend his title eight consecutive times, which is the most the UFC light heavyweight division has seen and third overall in the UFC falling behind Georges St-Pierre at nine and Anderson Silva at ten.

During the UFC 197 media call hyping up the fight for the interim light heavyweight title against Ovince Saint Preux, Jones said he feels his accolades have already established himself as one of the greatest fighters the UFC has ever seen, which grants him a spot in the UFC Hall of Fame.

To validate his career, Jones says it is only what he has to do outside of fighting to gain his own stamp of approval.

“Only thing I need to do is do the right things outside of the Octagon,” Jones said on the media call (at 25:00) “You know, I could never fight again and be put in the Hall of Fame. I’m not saying that to sound arrogant, but we all know it’s true. So I just need to do the right things outside of the Octagon. That’s it.”

Jones has a colorful history with the law and ended up getting stripped of his title and suspended from the UFC in 2015 and feels that his toughest fight is with himself.

“Me retiring and nobody hearing about me on the news ever again, that’s a huge victory for me and I’m going to try my hardest to make sure that happens.

“Outside of that, when it comes to actually fighting, I don’t feel like I have much to prove to anybody. I have done some pretty amazing things in the sport and you know fighting is a journey. You have your ups and downs, you have your wins, your losses. Fortunately, I’ve never lost. But, wins and losses at this point in my life don’t define who I am. I think I am a champion for the rest of my life. What is going to define who I am is how I get my life under control outside of fighting.”
