VIDEO | Kevin Lee’s reaction to initially weighing in at 156 for UFC 216 title fight
The weigh-ins for UFC 216 were filled with suspense as Kevin Lee waited till the very last moment to weigh in for his UFC interim title fight against Tony Ferguson.
Lee needed a towel to weigh in as he took off all of his clothing to ensure no extra weight was on him and stepped on the scale and tried to wipe any remaining sweat off his body. The “Motown Phenom” had a look of confidence as he stared down at the official operating the scale and even nodded his head and made a fist.
The official read Lee’s weight at 156-pounds and the main event fighter had a look of disbelief on his face as he looked down at the scale measurement. For UFC title fights, the one-pound weight allowance over the weight division limit is not allowed. Lee then stepped off the scale with the towel wrapped around him with a look of disgust.
While many initially believed the interim title fight would be off or in jeopardy with Lee not making the title fight weight, Bob Bennett who is the executive director for the Nevada State Atheltic Commission stated that per commission rules, Lee would be given one hour to make the weight limit of 155 pounds if given medical clearance by a doctor.
Lee took to the scales one hour later and came in under the 155 limit, with an official weight of 154.5 pounds and the UFC interim lightweight title fight between Tony Ferguson and Kevin Lee was made official.
