Earlier this week it was announced that Conor McGregor and Eddie Alvarez would be squaring off in the main event of UFC 205 for the lightweight champion in the UFC’s historic inaugural Madison Square Garden event.

In addition to the fight headlining a historic fight card, it could very well see McGregor cement his place in the UFC’s history books as the only fighter in UFC history to simultaneously hold belts in two weight divisions. Furthermore, it gives McGregor the rare chance to become the third man in UFC history to hold two belts in two weight classes.

While fight fans are extremely excited to see two of the baddest men on the planet square off inside the Octagon at the Madison Square Garden, there has been some controversy regarding the fight.

McGregor won the UFC featherweight championship back at UFC 194 in November of 2015. Following his 13 second KO win over Jose Aldo, McGregor opted to move up in weight rather than defend his belt. After back to back fights at welterweight with Nate Diaz, UFC President Dana White stated that McGregor must defend his featherweight strap or vacate the belt.

After it was announced that McGregor was moving up to lightweight, White stated that if McGregor leaves The Empire State victorious, he must vacate one of the two title belts.

While McGregor is going into the bout on a win, following the first loss of his UFC career, Alvarez will be riding a 3-fight win streak into the bout that most recently saw him capture the UFC lightweight championship back in July by knocking out Rafael dos Anjos.

Above you can see a spectacular fan-made promo for the fight between the two, using footage from their UFC fights, as well as the UFC 205 press conference which took place earlier in the week, where the pair came face to face for the first time.
