VIDEO | Tyron Woodley describes touching story on why he is giving his newest UFC belt away
Tyron Woodley had another new UFC welterweight champion belt wrapped around his waist on Saturday night. “The Chosen One” successfully defended his title as judges awarded him a majority decision in his UFC 209 championship bout against Stephen Thompson after five rounds of close competition.
Speaking with TMZ, Woodley says he won’t be holding on to the actual belt for very long. Woodley says he’ll be shipping the belt to a fan that gave him a very inspiring story right before the fight, which helped push him in the fifth round of his rematch against “Wonderboy.”
“My goals were never to be this filthy rich, infamous guy that everybody loves,” said Tyron Woodley. “My goal was to get a platform to reach people and I’m still reaching people and got people supporting me and I still got fans.
“A young lady walked up to me, she walked up to me and said, ‘Hey, my daughter died.’ A girl named Savannah. She said, ‘My daughter Anaya died.’ Shout out to Savannah for telling me this story. I was thinking about this during the fight in the fifth round where I couldn’t just let him steal my belt.”
The UFC welterweight champion explained how the young woman told him how she was coping with the death of her daughter and how she thought she wouldn’t be able to get through life without her. The woman full of emotions, explained to him that after watching how Woodley fights and lives his life outside of the Octagon, she was inspired and moved out to Las Vegas and that meeting him was one of the best days of her life. “The Chosen One,” said that she told him before fighting at UFC 209 that he had to go out and win for her and for her daughter that passed away, which is just what Tyron Woodley did.
