Yoel Romero reacts to Michael Bisping vs. Georges St-Pierre booking

Tom Taylor - March 2, 2017

Earlier this month, we learned that former welterweight champion and bona fide MMA legend Georges St-Pierre had ironed out his differences with the UFC and agreed to the terms of a new contract. Yesterday, we learned that the first fight of his anticipated comeback will pit him against middleweight champion Michael Bisping, at a to-be-determined date and location. This news, unsurprisingly, thrust the combat sports world into a frenzy, as some fans applauded the matchup, and others shook their heads at the way St-Pierre’s title shot sabotages the many more deserving middleweight contenders – contenders like Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza, Luke Rockhold, Robert Whittaker, Gegard Mousasi, and of course, streaking Cuban powerhouse Yoel Romero.

UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping has continued to find his name in headlines despite the fact that he is currently sidelined with a knee injury sustained in his UFC 204 title defense against Dan Henderson, where he picked up a unanimous decision win, defending his title for the first time. While UFC President Dana White recently stated that when Bisping is ready to return to the Octagon, he will be defending his title against Yoel Romero, recently released odds indicate the Bisping is the most likely opponent for former UFC welterweight kingpin Georges St-Pierre in his highly anticipated return fight.

Manager: Michael Bisping is "absolutely ducking Yoel Romero right now"

Tom Taylor - February 22, 2017

Back in November, streaking Cuban contender Yoel Romero knocked out former middleweight champion Chris Weidman with a third-round flying knee, earning himself a shot at the current middleweight champ Michael Bisping in the process. Regrettably, however, Romero’s title shot still hasn’t been booked, and there seems to be increasing reason for him to worry it won’t happen, as Bisping flirts with the idea of super fights with Georges St-Pierre and Tyron Woodley.

UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping has been at war with the #1 UFC ranked middleweight contender Yoel Romero. From battles on social media, to Romero even calling in to Bisping’s podcast show, there has been a lot brewing between the two with no official bout announced. Speaking with Ariel Helwani on Monday’s episode of The MMA Hour, “The Count” said that all signs are pointing to him defending his belt againt Romero next, unless former welterweight kingpin Georges St-Pierre has any say in it.

When Yoel Romero knocked out former middleweight champ Chris Weidman with a flying knee at UFC 205, he seemed to have guaranteed himself a shot at reigning middleweight king Michael Bisping. Though UFC President Dana White has assured Romero would get the next crack at middleweight gold on several occasions, Bisping himself has wavered on this fight, explaining that he’d rather take a more lucrative fight, and that he doesn’t want to fight Romero based on his 2016 brush with USADA.

Michael Bisping fires back at Yoel Romero

bjpenndotcom - February 8, 2017

Wednesday morning, UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping found his name making MMA headlines after middleweight #1 contender Yoel Romero began to call him out on social media. Romero questioned whether or not Bisping would ever accept a fight with him, and demanded Bisping be stripped of the belt should the champ not accept a fight with him. Romero then launched a GoFundMe campaign to pay for Bisping’s medical expenses after the pair have their eventual fight.

bjpenndotcom - February 8, 2017

Following Yoel Romero’s UFC 205 win over Chris Weidman in 2016, UFC President Dana White confirmed that Yoel Romero would be getting the next middleweight title shot against Michael Bisping when the champ is ready to return from a knee surgery. Bisping of course, in his time off, has been pushing for a superfight with welterweight champion Tyron Woodley, who recently was booked for a UFC 209 fight with Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson. Despite that, Bisping has maintained that a fight with Romero isn’t at the top of his wish-list, but maintained that he would fight the Cuban Olympian.

This Saturday, on the main card of UFC 208, Tim Boetsch will take on the incredibly dangerous Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza. If he’s able to spring the upset against this highly regarded foe, he will find himself in the top-end of the middleweight rankings, where fights with foes like Chris Weidman, Gegard Mousasi, Yoel Romero, and champ Michael Bisping could await. All four of the aforementioned men, of course, are currently busy. Weidman and Mousasi will duke it out at UFC 210, while Bisping and Romero are expected to fight for the title sometime in the next few months.

It sounds like UFC President Dana White has the matchup already lined up as he told Matt Serra and Jim Norton on the latest “UFC Unfiltered” podcast that #1 UFC ranked middleweight Yoel Romero is next in line for Bisping, with former middleweight champion Anderson Silva right there in the mix if he gets his hand raised over Derek Brunson at UFC 208.

Gegard Mousasi: Michael Bisping has "a good chance" against Yoel Romero

Tom Taylor - January 31, 2017

In June of 2016, British middleweight veteran Michael Bisping shocked the world by snuffing Luke Rockhold in the first round to win the UFC middleweight title. Bisping followed this win by defending the title against Dan Henderson with a controversial decision win. Despite his status as a defending champion, however, Bisping is likely to be a substantial underdog in his next bout, which will pit him against former Olympian Yoel Romero at a to-be-determined date.

Yoel Romero trolls Michael Bisping on social media

bjpenndotcom - January 26, 2017

Yoel Romero is really working for the middleweight title shot! To end 2016, UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping made his first successful title defense as he picked up a unanimous decision win over Dan Henderson at UFC 204 in England. Following the win, Yoel Romero was crowned the middleweight #1 contender after picking up a brutal 3rd round KO win over former middleweight champion Chris Weidman on the main card of UFC 205 in November. With Romero declared the middleweight #1 contender, many were wondering when the UFC would officially announce the scrap, however Bisping revealed in a recent interview that he would be sidelined until April or May as he recovered from knee surgery, at which point he would pursue a money fight.

Yoel Romero sends Tim Kennedy retirement message

bjpenndotcom - January 18, 2017

This week, MMA veteran Tim Kennedy announced his retirement from MMA several weeks after dropping a 3rd round TKO to Kelvin Gastelum on the main card of UFC 206. The loss marked Kennedy’s second in a row, and his first fight in over two years. At UFC 178 in 2014, Kennedy and streaking middleweight Yoel Romero stepped into the Octagon for what remains to this day, one of the most controversial fights in MMA history. At the end of the second round, Kennedy had Romero rocked and nearly finished. ‘Soldier of God’ survived the end of the round, and was in the process of recovering between rounds. When the horn sounded to signal the start of the third round, Romero remained on his stool while referee Big John McCarthy called for Romero’s corner to wipe excess vaseline from him, and retrieve the stool from the cage. Kennedy complained as Romero continued to sit on the stool, ultimately buying himself nearly an extra minute between rounds to recover. When the third round started, Romero went out and TKOd Kennedy. Of course this caused quite a bit of controversy as many criticized Romero for stalling between rounds. Despite that, Romero explained the reason he was rocked at the end of the second was because Kennedy had allegedly stuck his fingers in Romero’s gloves in order to land the shots.

Michael Bisping: 'None of these contenders will stand with me'

Tom Taylor - November 29, 2016

As the champion of the UFC’s stacked middleweight division, England’s Michael Bisping has a big, red target on his back. All around him, dangerous contenders are swirling, each hungry for their shot at the title he swiped from Luke Rockhold earlier this year. Bisping’s next challenge as champion is likely to be provided by former Olympic wrestler Yoel Romero, who earned the title shot with a blistering, flying knee knockout of former champion Chris Weidman on the main card of UFC 205. Just behind Romero is Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza, a ferocious grappler who, today, is as known for his fight-altering punching power as he is for his submissions. Beyond Romero and Jacare are dangerous contenders like Gegard Mousasi, who recently dominated Uriah Hall to a first-round TKO, and Robert Whittaker, who turned Derek Brunson off with a head kick last Saturday. Needless to say, the champ is going to need to be absolutely on point if he intends to defend his belts from this murderer’s row of middleweights.
