Wednesday morning, UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping found his name making MMA headlines after middleweight #1 contender Yoel Romero began to call him out on social media. Romero questioned whether or not Bisping would ever accept a fight with him, and demanded Bisping be stripped of the belt should the champ not accept a fight with him. Romero then launched a GoFundMe campaign to pay for Bisping’s medical expenses after the pair have their eventual fight.

Following Yoel Romero’s UFC 205 win over Chris Weidman in 2016, UFC President Dana White confirmed that Yoel Romero would be getting the next middleweight title shot against Michael Bisping when the champ is ready to return from a knee surgery. Bisping of course, in his time off, has been pushing for a superfight with welterweight champion Tyron Woodley, who recently was booked for a UFC 209 fight with Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson. Despite that, Bisping has maintained that a fight with Romero isn’t at the top of his wish-list, but maintained that he would fight the Cuban Olympian.

This Saturday, on the main card of UFC 208, Tim Boetsch will take on the incredibly dangerous Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza. If he’s able to spring the upset against this highly regarded foe, he will find himself in the top-end of the middleweight rankings, where fights with foes like Chris Weidman, Gegard Mousasi, Yoel Romero, and champ Michael Bisping could await. All four of the aforementioned men, of course, are currently busy. Weidman and Mousasi will duke it out at UFC 210, while Bisping and Romero are expected to fight for the title sometime in the next few months.

This weekend, on the main card of UFC 208, middleweight contender Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza will take on the unheralded but undeniably dangerous Tim Boetsch. If he’s able to pass this test, the next step would seem to be a bout with the winner of champ Michael Bisping and challenger Yoel Romero’s yet-unscheduled title fight. Jacare, however, is not confident this is the way things will unfold.

Yoel Romero is really working for the middleweight title shot! To end 2016, UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping made his first successful title defense as he picked up a unanimous decision win over Dan Henderson at UFC 204 in England. Following the win, Yoel Romero was crowned the middleweight #1 contender after picking up a brutal 3rd round KO win over former middleweight champion Chris Weidman on the main card of UFC 205 in November. With Romero declared the middleweight #1 contender, many were wondering when the UFC would officially announce the scrap, however Bisping revealed in a recent interview that he would be sidelined until April or May as he recovered from knee surgery, at which point he would pursue a money fight.

Just behind Romero is Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza, a ferocious grappler who, today, is as known for his fight-altering punching power as he is for his submissions. While November was set to be a month of potential #1 contender fights for the UFC’s middleweight division, former middleweight champion Luke Rockhold withdrew form his scheduled ‘UFC Fight Night: Melbourne’ fight with Jacare Souza this weekend, leading the UFC to make UFC 205’s Chris Weidman vs. Yoel Romero fight the middleweight #1 contender fight. Romero won the fight in impressive fashion, knocking Weidman out in the third round where the scorecards were tied 1-1. Brilliant fight IQ by Romero set up a perfect flying knee in the third round, knocking Weidman out and opening up a massive massive cut on the side of the former champion’s head.

This Saturday, middleweight contender Derek Brunson will look to extend his streak to six with a win over Australia’s Robert Whittaker. The two middleweights will share the main event honors of the UFC’s latest trip to Melbourne, Australia, which was originally supposed to be headlined by a rematch between Luke Rockhold and Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza. Though Brunson is focused on his bout with Whittaker – and is wary of the risks that bout presents – he is already thinking about who he wants if he’s able to win in Australia. If he has his way, his reward for beating Whittaker will be a rematch with top-contender Yoel Romero.

On Wednesday, MMA Fighting reported per New York State Department spokesperson Laz Benitez that Yoel Romero has been suspended for 60 days for exiting the Octagon after beating former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman in their UFC 205 contest.

There is no denying the monstrous talent of Yoel Romero. The Cuban wrestler is one of the best middleweights in the world, and when he fights Michael Bisping for the belt in early 2017, he could would establish himself as the best outright. Unfortunately, Romero has developed a bit of a reputation for his tendency to play with the rules. The most noteworthy example of this problem occurred in a 2014 bout with Tim Kennedy, when he took extra time to get off his stool between rounds two and three – this after being badly hurt by Kennedy as the second round ended.
