Yoel Romero is interested in moving to light heavyweight to battle Daniel Cormier

This weekend, in the main event of UFC 225, Yoel Romero will battle Robert Whittaker for the UFC middleweight title. From the sounds of it, this might not be the only title fight in Romero’s future.

Yoel Romero, Daniel Cormier

Speaking at a UFC 225 media scrum, Romero was asked about the possibility of moving up to the 205-pound light heavyweight division for a battle with divisional champion Daniel Cormier, a fellow Olympic wrestler. Apparently, he’s into the idea.

“Why not?” Romero said of a light heavyweight fight with Cormier (via MMA Fighting). “That’s my job and a job for [UFC president] Dana [White], too. [Cormier and I] have a good relationship for a long time. It’s like in wrestling. I can wrestle with him, it’s no problem. I can wrestle with him and after that I go eat lunch or something with him. Why not?”

These comments from Romero are particularly interesting given that he missed weight for his last middleweight fight, in which he knocked out Luke Rockhold. That being said, Romero assures this weigh-in blunder was a one-time thing.

“[Middleweight has been] my division for 21 years,” Romero said. “I never don’t make weight. That’s the first time.”

While Romero would be interested in a 205-pound title fight with Cormier, he’ll probably have to wait a little while for such a thing to occur. Cormier is currently undergoing a divisional switch of his own, moving up to heavyweight to battle the champ Stipe Miocic at UFC 226. Given that Romero is already 41 years old, the window for this potential fight also seems quite small.

Do not expect Romero to slow down, however. He’s shown no signs of aging yet, and doesn’t expect to any time soon.

“That’s God,” Romero said of his youthfulness and longevity. “God blessed me. I help God, too. God gave me the power and [speed]. If i go to the streets, I eat everything [it would disrespect God]. I give the blessings to God, because you have to respect God.”
