Yoel Romero’s Manager Eyes a UFC 225 Return for Robert Whittaker Title Fight

After an awesome battle with Luke Rockhold and an even more incredible finish, the worry was that Yoel Romero had a broken leg coming out of the fight at UFC 221. However, the good news is that it is just a deep bruise that is expected to heal rather quickly, which puts Romero back to work on his road to gold. After already being punished for missing weight, he’s expected to face Robert Whittaker later this year. Romero has said he’d like the bout to take place in Miami, but manager Malki Kawa just said UFC 225 in Chicago may be a possibility.

“[Yoel Romero] almost pulled out of the fight. The man re-hydrated, went to sleep the next morning, and still he wasn’t feeling the best. He even told me, ‘I’m not 100-percent.’ He could have fooled me. Nobody that I know wants to lose $100,000 over three pounds. The man wasn’t trying to do that. He tried, and he couldn’t do it. He paid the penalty.”

Can confirm @YoelRomeroMMA has no breaks in his leg, and is injury free… everything came back ok. Looking forward to Robert Whitaker getting healthy and making that fight in the summer

“I’m thinking that [UFC 225] might be the card, only because [Romero’s] leg is just a deep shin bruise, and he’ll be off of it for this week and maybe next week. I think it’s enough time. The thing is [with Robert] Whittaker; his health is the one in question right now. The poor guy had staph and then he got the chicken pox, so if he’s healthy and able to have a full training camp. I’m going to figure that out today.” – Malki Kawa speaking to MMA Junkie.

There is currently no Miami card in development as far as we know, but UFC 225 takes place June 9th. If the UFC decided to make a card for Miami which the Cuban could headline, it’d mark the first UFC event to take place since UFC 42 in 2003. The kicker for the date will largely rely on when Robert Whittaker is going to be healed up and ready after his triple-threat of ailments that took him out of the UFC 221 fight with Luke Rockhold to begin with.
