UFC stars Dustin Poirier and Islam Makhachev posed for a great picture backstage following their war at UFC 302. Last night at UFC 302, Dustin Poirier and Islam Makhachev really did go to war. The two battled it out in what proved to be an absolutely fascinating encounter in the main event of the evening. Ultimately, though, it was Makhachev who managed to get the job done submitting Poirier in the fifth round to retain the UFC lightweight championship.

Dustin Poirier got a bit emotional during his backstage interview with Megan Olivi following UFC 302. “The Diamond” fell just short in what may have been his final opportunity at undisputed UFC gold this past Saturday. Poirier challenged Islam Makhachev for the UFC Lightweight Championship inside the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. Poirier found success with his takedown defense and in the standup, but he couldn’t seal the deal as Makhachev sunk in a D’Arce Choke in the final round to retain his 155-pound hardware.

UFC legend Khabib Nurmagomedov shared a moment with Donald Trump at UFC 302 last night. In the main event of UFC 302, Islam Makhachev defeated Dustin Poirier. He submitted him in the fifth and final round to retain his UFC lightweight championship. Of course, Islam’s achievement was incredible, but it was made even better by the fact that Khabib Nurmagomedov was there in his corner.

UFC CEO Dana White believes judge Dave Tirelli has no business judging UFC fights. Tirelli was at the center of controversy for his judging during the UFC 302 card this past Saturday. Two fights put Tirelli under the microscope. First, there was his scorecard for the preliminary bout between Andre Lima and Mitch Raposo. While judges Adrian Castro and Eric Colon both saw the fight 30-27 in favor of Lima, Tirelli somehow scored the bout 29-28 in favor of Raposo.

The Octagon returned to New Jersey for tonight’s UFC 302 event, a twelve-bout fight card headlined by Islam Makhachev vs. Dustin Poirier. The highly anticipated lightweight title fight resulted in a thrilling back and forth affair. Islam Makhachev was able to get off to a strong start in the opening round, dominating Dustin Poirier on the canvas. However, ‘The Diamond’ had a much better second frame and was able to gain some confidence. Round three resulted in another good round for Makhachev, as he was once again able to get the fight to the floor. Then, in round four, ‘The Diamond’ was able to find success on the feet, opening up a bad cut on the reigning champ. Despite his best efforts, Poirier wound up getting taken down in the fifth and final round, which allowed Islam to lock up a fight-ending d’arce choke submission (see that here).
