Anthony Pettis: ‘I Couldn’t See Out Of My Right Eye The Whole Time’
The MMA world was shocked when two champions lost their belts at UFC 185. Both Carla Esparza and Anthony Pettis got beat up Saturday night and will have to go back to the drawing board in hopes of getting back to the title.
Perhaps even more shocking is the way that Pettis got beat. Rafeal dos Anjos stayed on him from beginning to end, landing big strikes and taking him down whenever he wanted. ‘Showtime’ lost every round of the fight. It’s fair to say he got beat up pretty bad.
So why was the now former champion so unlike himself? Many wonder if his younger brother losing early in the night had an effect on the champ, but according to the lightweight fighter himself, it was an injury to his eye that caused his lackluster performance.
“Man, [dos Anjos] caught me with the left hand, the first punch he threw, I couldn’t see out of my right eye the whole time,” he said to Joe Rogan during the post-fight interview, “It closed up on me, I didn’t have any peripheral [vision]. No excuses, I’ve got to go back to the gym and train.”
