BJPENN.COM Updated MMA Rankings: See Who Is In Our Top 10 | UFC NEWS

By BJPENN.COM News - February 25, 2013

The UFC released their official rankings a few weeks ago, and many people disagreed with them. Here at BJPENN.com we decided to update our own rankings.

When looking at the Heavyweight division rankings, we match up with UFC.com almost identically. Cain Velasquez tops the ladder, with Junior Dos Santos coming in at #2. Fabricio Werdum comes in at #3 after putting together 5 impressive victories in his last 6 fights. Next we have Olympic Wrestler and former Strikeforce champion Daniel Cormier coming in at #4. And coming in at #5 is Antonio Bigfoot Silva, who is coming off a huge victory over Alistair Overeem a few weeks ago, and earned a rematch with now-champion Cain Velasquez.

Moving down to the Light Heavyweight division we list Dan Henderson at #2 followed by Lyoto Machida at #3, although after UFC 157 last night, you can expect to see that change and Lyoto become the #1 contender and fight the winner of Jon Jones vs. Chael Sonnen. Next, UFC.com lists Alexander Gustafsson who is 7-1(UFC) with his only loss coming to Phil Davis, but besides Mauricio Shogun Rua Gustafsson hasn’t fought the caliber of guys that Rashad Evans has, so for that reason, we give #4 on our rankings to Rashad Evans. Going off my last point, Phil Davis is 6-1-1(UFC) with his only loss coming at the hands of Rashad Evans. What separates Davis from Gustfsson is that Davis has fought elite level fighters like Antonio Nogueira, so for that reason we give spot #5 to Davis.

At Middleweight Anderson Silva reigns supreme, with Chael Sonnen at #2, although Sonnen has moved up to the Light Heavyweight division, he has yet to fight there, and being the only man in the world to come within minutes of defeating Anderson Silva, it’s very hard not to give Chael that spot. Coming in at #3 is Vitor Belfort, coming off a brutal KO victory over Michael Bisping, Vitor is next in line at Anderson’s title. Next we have Chris Weidman, a highly skilled wrestler who decimated Mark Munoz, and whose name has been thrown around in title fight talks. With elite level wrestling, and given Anderson Silva’s weakness for wrestlers, we give him spot #4. Next we give Michael Bisping spot #5 although he’s coming off a brutal loss to Vitor Belfort, Bisping still remains one of the Middleweight division’s elite fighters.

In a stacked Welterweight division, Georges St. Pierre is still top dog. However Carlos Condit almost finished him in their fight, so for that reason, Carlos Condit takes spot #2. At #3 is arguably the hardest hitting man in the entire UFC, Johny Hendricks. Hendricks will fight Condit in April, and the winner will most likely get a shot at the Welterweight strap. Next we rank Nick Diaz who although coming off a decision loss to Carlos Condit, will be fighting Welterweight kingpin Georges St. Pierre this April. Last but certainly not least is Martin Kampmann, although coming off a quick KO loss to Johny Hendricks, Kampmann was on a 3-fight win streak, so for that reason, we give him spot #5.

Arguably the most talent-filled division in the UFC, Benson Henderson is the Lightweight Division Kingpin, with a fight with MMA veteran Gilbert Melendez coming up, we give Melendez spot #2 on our ladder. Nate Diaz comes in at #3 regardless of his recent loss to Ben Henderson. Before that loss he was on a 3-0 win streak, defeating top fighters Jim Miller, Donald Cerrone, and Takanori Gomi. At #4 is Gray Maynard who, before losing to Frankie Edgar, was 9-0(UFC) with the majority of those wins coming against top fighters. Last but certainly not least at #5 is the always impressive Anthony Pettis, who has since defeating Donald Cerrone via TKO has dropped down to Featherweight to fight Jose Aldo.

At Featherweight Jose Aldo tops to ladder of course, with Frankie Edgar at #2. Edgar is on a 3-fight losing streak, with two losses to Benson Henderson, and most recently a loss to Jose Aldo. Regardless, Frankie Edgar will always be a top contender regardless of his weight class. At #3 is Chad Mendes who is 13-1(MMA) 4-1(UFC) with his only loss coming to champion Jose Aldo. Next is Ricardo Lamas at #4 who most recently defeated Eric Koch with brutal elbows that left Koch battered and bloody, if Pettis hadn’t dropped to fight Aldo, Lamas could have very well been in that spot. Last is German Kickboxer Dennis Siver, who is 2-0 since dropping down to featherweight.

In the Bantamweight division Dominick Cruz has been out with a torn ACL, however when he returns, fans can expect a great fight against interim champion Renan Barao, Cruz and Barao are numbers one and two on our ladder. Michael McDonald was 15-1(MMA) 2-0(UFC) before losing to Renan Barao last weekend, for that reason he takes spot #3. At #4 is MMA veteran Urijah Faber, who defeated Ivan Menjivar at UFC 157 yesterday via rear-naked choke. Last we have Eddie Wineland who is on a 2-fight win streak including a fight of the night performance against Scott Jorgensen.

And finally, we have the Flyweight Division, Demetrius Johnson sits atop the fresh division coming off a win over John Dodson in January. At #2 we have Joseph Benavidez, who recently defeated Ian McCall. Fans can expect to see Benavidez fight Johnson in the near future. John Dodson ranks in at #3 on our ladder, the TUF season 14 winner is coming off a loss to Demetrius Johnson in January, but with hopes of becoming the first ever 3-division champion, Dodson hopes to bounce back quick. At #4 we have Ian McCall, with arguably the best nickname (and mustache) in the UFC, McCall fought now-champion Demetrius Johnson to an exciting decision loss that was quickly overturned and declared a draw back in March. Coming in at #5 on our Flyweight ladder is Jussier De Silva also known as Jussier Formiga. Jussier is 0-1 in the UFC, with his loss coming against John Dodson in the Flyweight title eliminator back in October.
