Cain Velasquez passed on submitting JDS to prove point

Current UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez (12-1 MMA, 10-1 UFC) is set to face former UFC heavyweight title holder Junior dos Santos (16-2 MMA, 10-1 UFC) for a third time, when the two sluggers square off in the main event of Saturday’s UFC 166 card in Houston, Texas.

JDS was able to defeat Velasquez via first-round knockout when the two first met in November of 2011. However, in their rematch at UFC 155, Velasquez was able to dominate Dos Santos for five rounds on route to recapturing the heavyweight title.

In an interview with ‘Yahoo Sports,’ Velasquez stated that he believes he could have submitted JDS at UFC 155, but just didn’t want to:

“My style of fighting, I’d rather end fights with ground and pound and stuff like that,” Velasquez said. “I felt he took something away from me that was mine, and I figured I had to make him pay for that. That’s why I didn’t go for the submission.”
