Chael Sonnen Calls Wanderlei Silva a ‘Distraction’ Leading Up to Evans Fight
Chael Sonnen and Wanderlei Silva have been going back-and-forth for some time now as both men dance around a potential fight that has yet to come to fruition.
Although their feud almost came to blows recently, the two still sit on opposite sides of the fence with Silva reportedly being out of action due to injury until early next year, and Sonnen battling UFC desk-mate Rashad Evans.
Recently, Sonnen revealed just what the attention from his rival, Silva has been attributing to his fight camp (via MMAFighting.com):
“He’s a distraction. He’s a distraction, no doubt about it. It’s silly. In this sport, you cannot refuse to fight a guy and then come out and talk about that guy,” Sonnen explained. “It’s like, ‘Listen, Wanderlei. I’ve said a lot of things about a lot of people, but I’ll make that walk every goddamn time.’ I will never pull out of a fight. I will never call in sick, and I will never say no. That gives me the right to say the things that I say.”
These words come in response to Silva turning down a fight agreement in favor of PPV points as opposed to a headlining spot on a free-TV card.
Sonnen, through all the verbal banter, says he knows the reason why Silva is pursuing a rivalry with Sonnen:
“I get it, he needs media. The UFC can’t give it to him because he’s not relevant. That’s not an insult, that’s just the reality. He’s just not relevant. He doesn’t have a fight coming up. But, it’s bizarre, and it’s also very transparent.”
Silva seems to want the fight based on online videos posted by his fight camp, yet no word has been given as stated earlier, both men are currently wrapped up with prior engagements.
