“Cowboy” Cerrone: Dana White wouldn’t let me move to 170 pounds

By BJPENN.COM News - October 19, 2015

Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone is one of the more popular fighters to ever step foot in the octagon and it’s with good reason; He is willing and able to take on a fight at a moment’s notice no matter who the caliber of opponent. When Khabib Nurmagomedov was forced to pull out of their high-profile fight at UFC 187, Cerrone could have easily asked for a shot at the title. Instead, “Cowboy” risked his top-contender status to face John Makdessi.

One could imagine the fights we would have seen if Cerrone were permitted to take a fight in the welterweight division. That may have been able to take place in the early days of World Extreme Cagefighting, but UFC President Dana White and other UFC brass would not permit Cerrone to go up in weight.

“Dana White and Lorenzo Fertitta, they tell me I’m staying at 155. I’ve tried to go up and take fights at 170. Not happening,” Cerrone informed fans who follow him on Periscope.
