Dana White: ‘Gastelum Was A Completely Different Person On Fight Night’
Leading up to UFC 183, co-main event fighter Kelvin Gastelum missed weight by 9 pounds for his bout against Tyron Woodley.
Immediately fans began wondering why officials allowed the bout to continue with Gastelum coming in so overweight. News surfaced that Gastelum had been ill, and nearly passed out, and even taken to the hospital.
UFC President Dana White elaborated at the post-fight press conference.
“I didn’t know if he had passed out or not, but he was definitely having a hard cut,. They took him to the hospital, and he was definitely in a bad way (on Friday).”
“Even after Tyron said he’d accept the fight with him 10 pounds over, we still didn’t know if Gastelum was going to fight. We didn’t know until (fight night).”
“They obviously let him get some fluids, rest and sleep. He woke up (on Saturday), and they reevaluated him and said he was OK to fight. When I talked to him … when he got here at the arena, he was a completely different person than he was (on Friday), as you can imagine.”
The commission fined Gastelum 30% of his purse, however his opponent Tyron Woodley said he wouldn’t accept his opponents money.
