Dana White: GSP is never coming back to UFC
In 2013, Georges St. Pierre dropped a bombshell on the mixed martial arts community when he announced his temporary retirement. The Canadian forfeited his role as UFC Welterweight Champion and ultimately revealed he wanted the sport to be cleaned up.
Nearly a year later, UFC President Dana White announced a sponsorship between the company and the United States Anti-Doping Agency that would help rid the UFC of performance enhancing drugs. Since then, there have been several failed drug tests and confirmed random drug testings (most recently with Ryan Bader at 6:00 AM).
White and company were in Australia to hype the upcoming “UFC 193” event and he fielded fans’ questions in a Q&A session. One young fan asked White if he thought GSP would ever make his way back to he octagon and White’s answer was brutally honest. “I don’t think so, buddy, I’m sorry. GSP’s rich, man!. He’s hanging out and he’s living the good life.
White went on to explain how much passion fighters need to have when they step in the octagon, and he is questioning whether GSP is still hungry. “In this sport you have to be hungry. You have to jump out of bed every day and want it. You’ve gotta want to win, you’ve gotta want to be a world champion… He’s had it. He’s accomplished all that stuff. He’s made a lot of money, he’s accomplished a lot of things.”
“I don’t see him ever coming back, no.”
Do you think St. Pierre will ever make his way back to the octagon? There is no doubt his departure opened up a jammed welterweight division for exciting fights, but he was one of the top draws of our industry. Who would you want to see him face next?
