Floyd Mayweather Jr. Takes ESPY Over Jon Jones and Anderson Silva

The ESPY’s came and went last night as ESPN awarded athletes from all sports for achieving excellence in their respective sport.

As for the ‘Best Fighter’ category, MMA fell just short of prolific boxing champion, Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Mayweather Jr. took the award over former UFC middleweight champion, Anderson Silva and current light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones. This is Mayweather Jr.’s fifth ESPY for Best Fighter.

All three men have only fought once in 2013 with Mayweather defeating Robert Guerrero by unanimous decision back in May. As for Jones, an April victory over Chael Sonnen marked his last win. Silva is the only fighter of the three not to deliver a victory this year as he dropped his last fight to Chris Weidman at UFC 162, getting knocked out in the second round.

Perhaps Jones and Silva will fare better next year as both men are expected to fight in their most anticipated title fights to date. Jones will take on Alexander Gustafsson, his youngest title challenge yet. Silva will look to reclaim his title from Weidman at UFC 168 in the most anticipated fight in UFC history.

As for Mayweather, he has a chance to further stretch both his legacy in boxing and his undefeated streak as he takes on Saul ‘El Canelo’ Alvarez, who is also undefeated.
