Frank Mir: ‘Werdum vs. Velasquez Is A 50/50 Fight’
The UFC heavyweight title will once again be on the line when Fabricio Werdum meets Cain Velasquez in the octagon.
The rematch will take place at a yet to be announced venue and date, but fans and fighters have already started debating how the second fight will go down. There are plenty who point to the extreme altitude as an explantation for Velasquez’s uncharacteristic performance.
So, chances are good that the UFC won’t be putting the fight in an area like that again. In that case, how will the fight play out this time? It’s a tough question depending on who you ask.
Heavyweight Frank Mir thinks it’s a toss up.
He told MMAFighting:
“It’s a 50/50 fight. It could go either way.”
“I don’t think the elevation was as big a factor as everyone made it. I think what happened was, so many people have underestimated how much Werdum has improved and become a true, well-rounded fighter. Cain respected what Werdum can do on the ground, but I think Cain wasn’t prepared for how much better of an all-around kickboxer and great striker Werdum has become, and that caught up to him.
“He’s not going to make the same mistake twice. Those guys at AKA know how to make adjustments. I think you’re going to see Cain better prepared for a standup war and I’m not going to make a prediction, but I think it’s going to go either way.”
