GSP Admits To Recently Turning Down Fight Against Anderson Silva
Since Georges St. Pierre took an indefinite leave of absence from MMA back in November of 2013 after defeating Johny Hendricks, there has been much speculation as to when the former UFC welterweight kingpin would return to the Octagon.
Towards the end of 2014, it was revealed that GSP was cleared to resume training after recovering form a torn ACL, leaving many to wonder if it was a sign that ‘Rush’ would be returning to competition soon. St. Pierre has continued to shoot down rumors of his return, and now is even going as far as to reveal that he just recently turned down a fight against Anderson Silva.
He spoke on The MMA Hour, where he revealed that UFC President Dana White approached him about fighting Anderson Silva in Montreal.
“He told me to fight in Montreal and he also texted me to see if I was interested in fighting Anderson Silva right before the thing (drug test results) came out. I said no. And my answer was negative. Then the whole thing came up and it was bad. A fight versus Anderson wouldn’t interest me, Ed Soares said something in the media and then it make people talk. I never say never, but now is not the time for me. I am not interested right now. The way everything go, I’m not interested right now. I am busy with other things, too. I took a break and I now I am very happy. People talk bad about athletic commission, it’s not where it needs to be, but they made a lot of progress. They’re attempting to clean up the sport, it needs a lot of improvement and right now it is not where I believe it should be.”
