Hendo’s Coach: Vitor Belfort will ‘regret’ asking for Dan Henderson rematch
Vitor Belfort (23-10 MMA, 12-6 UFC) may still have Chael Sonnen in his sights, but “The Phenom” is already widening his search for potential opponents, this according to his wife and manager, Joana Prado. She spoke to SporTV recently and mentioned that should a fight with Sonnen fail to materialize, Belfort’s second option would be a rematch against former multi-division Pride champ Dan Henderson (29-9 MMA, 6-3 UFC).
Belfort and Henderson originally squared off at Pride 32 in 2006, with “Hendo” scoring a unanimous decision victory. After the fight, Vitor would test positive for elevated levels of testosterone.
When Dan Henderson’s Brazilian jiu-jitsu coach Ricardo Feliciano caught word of Vitor’s challenge, he revealed to ‘Fighters Only’ that they would be more than happy to accept the offer should it present itself:
“Vitor is at the top and Henderson is coming off two decision losses. A victory over him would build us up. Hendo is already 205lbs, this is his normal weight. If this bout happens in November, it will be excellent if included in (Georges St. Pierre’s) card in Las Vegas. I will pump him up. Vitor will regret to have asked for this rematch!”
The two decision losses for Henderson were to former UFC champions Lyoto Machida at UFC 157 and most recently Rashad Evans in the main event at UFC 161.
Belfort has stated that he will only fight at middleweight (185 pounds) if it is for the UFC title. As “The Phenom” has already turned down a proposed middleweight bout with Strikeforce veteran Tim Kennedy.
Is a rematch between Belfort and Hendeson a fight you would like to see made by the UFC? Let’s hear it Penn Nation!
