Hendricks Eyeing Fall Return, Puts Contenders On Notice

UFC Welterweight champion Johny Hendricks underwent surgery for a torn bicep shortly after winning the vacant title against Robbie Lawler. Hendricks spoke to USA Today Sports about how it feels being sidelined while fighters in his division tear it up.
βIt sucks being on the sidelines, knowing these guys are all fighting to get to me, and I canβt do anything about it,β Hendricks tells USA TODAY Sports. βI canβt train for it, canβt get ready for it. The only thing I can do is sit here and wait for them to battle it out. I donβt like that.β
βThey scared me into being a good patient,β Hendricks says. βItβs tough for me. Growing up wrestling, you get injured and they expect you back on the mat in a couple weeks unless itβs really bad. What I found out is that if I jump the gun, instead of being six weeks in a sling and six weeks recovering, it might turn into 12 weeks in a sling and 12 weeks recovering.β
After UFC 174, Rory MacDonald made his argument for why he deserves a title shot, Hendricks spoke about the title picture and MacDonald saying:
βHeβs one of those fighters that he can do that to people,β Hendricks says. βIβm not going to talk trash on anybody, but he makes guys feel awkward, But when someone is doing that, hey, youβve got to know that sometimes you have to eat a punch to deliver a punch. Sometimes youβve got to say to yourself, βI am paid to be an entertainer.β In my fights itβs not if I get hit; itβs when I get hit.β
UFC President Dana White had announced prior to MacDonald’s win over Woodley that the winner of next month’s Brown vs. Lawler matchup would get a shot at Hendricks.
βIf Matt Brown wins, thatβs awesome because itβd be nice to train for someone new,β Hendricks says. βBut if Robbie Lawler wins, Iβve trained for him before and I can do it again and make some corrections. I could also go into it injury-free this time. Thatβd be nice.β
