‘I’m going to finish Letourneau just like I finished Esparza and Penne’
UFC 193 will host one of the biggest events in Ultimate Fighting Championship history when Ronda Rousey and Joanna Jedrzejczyk defend their titles in the Etihad Stadium, which can house over 50,000 fans. The event is set to take place in Melbourne, Australia and the strawweight champion will be defending her championship against Valerie Letourneau.
The shot was originally expected to go to Claudia Gadelha, but she will be nursing an injury that will prohibit her from fighting at UFC 193 on November 15th. Letourneau is fresh off a dominant victory over Maryna Moroz at UFC Fight Night 74 in August and earned an unexpected shot at Jedrzejczyk’s title.
With only three octagon wins to her name, Letourneau was getting some criticism for earning a shot at the belt so early. Jedrzejczyk came to her defense, though, and justified Letourneau’s title shot during a recent press conference.
“She almost knocked [Moroz] out in the first round,” she said. “She did well, and she deserves to fight for a title.” Jedrzejczyk was happy to see her next challenger defeat Moroz out in such dominant fashion as she was quick to call the champion out after her debut. “I’m super happy that [Letourneau] beat Maryna Moroz because [Moroz] had a really big mouth. She called me [out] and wants to fight me, but Valerie did a great job with Maryna Moroz,” she said.
Just as quick as she put over Jedrzejczyk, she revealed just how confident she is walking into her next championship match. “The same is going to happen to her as what happened to Carla [Esparza] and Jessica Penne,” she promised.
