Jon Jones vs. Glover Teixeira Rumored for UFC 169 Main Event; Frank Mir vs. Alistair Overeem Moved to Same Card

The return of UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones (19-1) has an Tentative date. That date is February 1st, on the UFC’s annual Super Bowl Weekend card. His opponent will be Brazilian powerhouse, Glover Teixeira (22-2). They are rumored to face off in the main event of UFC 169.

Jones returns from a razor-thin unanimous decision victory over Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 165 in September, a bout that stirred up controversy due to viewers of the bout being decidedly split on the decision.

The number one contender, Teixeira has climbed the ranks of the light-heavyweight division over the past year defeating 5 straight opponents and extending his overall win streak to 20 fights. Teixeira has beaten notable UFC fighters such as former UFC light-heavyweight champion, Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson and most recently, Ryan Bader.

A ‘do-or-die’ bout for two former heavyweight world champions has been moved to the UFC 169 card and could very well serve as the co-main event.

Frank Mir (16-8) and Alistair Overeem (36-13, 1 NC) have both hid a career skid as of late going a combined 0-5 in their last five. Now they fight for redemption as their fight marks who still has the chance to return to the Octagon.

Their bout was originally scheduled for UFC 167 in November but was pushed back to allow more time for Mir to recover following an August TKO loss to Josh Barnett at UFC 164.

Mir’s opponent, Overeem, returns after back-to-back KO losses at the hands of Antonio Silva and Travis Browne. His most recent was the Browne fight in which he was knocked out in the first round despite a blistering attack that saw him in control of the fight for the majority of its duration.

UFC 169 is rumored to be headlined by the light-heavyweight title bout as Jon Jones defends his title against Glover Teixeira. UFC 169 takes place on February 1st at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
