Nova Uniao coach wants Aldo vs. Pettis at a catchweight

UFC featherweight champion and longtime division ruler, Jose Aldo, appeared to be lightweight-bound, this after defeating Ricardo Lamas 49-46 on each of the judges scorecards at UFC 169 in Newark, N.J. last weekend.

“Scarface” stated his desire to fight the UFC’s lightweight champion, Anthony Pettis, at the UFC 169 post-fight press conference:

“It’s not only about me, I want the (Pettis) fight, the fans want the fight. So why not?” said Aldo. “We’re ready to fight, so lets get this fight!”

UFC President supported Aldo’s wishes by stating the following:

“Sounds like we got a fight. There you go, that was easy. Got that deal done. One more thing I do not have to do on Monday.”

Unfortunately, not everyone is on board with the stipulations of this fight, including Aldo’s longtime Nova Uniao coach, Andre Pederneiras, who told Ta na Area (via MMAFighting) that perhaps a 150-pound catchweight bout would best serve the promotion:

“(A catchweight) would be interesting for both, they would keep the belts and do the fight everybody wants to see. Nobody wants to take the other’s title, we want to see the fight and do a great show for everybody. Aldo would move up a little, Pettis cuts a little, and it’s good for everybody.”

Aldo’s win over Lamas marked his 17th straight victory and 6th UFC title defense. “Scarface’s” lone loss came back in November of 2005 in a lightweight bout.

Meanwhile, Pettis has yet to defend his UFC lightweight championship since earning the strap with his first-round submission of Ben Henderson at August’s UFC 164 event in Milwaukee.

Since debuting with the UFC in June of 2011, “Showtime” has massed 5 octagon appearances, four of which he came out victorious.

“It’s going to be a tough fight, like all the others,” Pederneiras said. “I always say that the next fight is always the toughest. It’s going to be just like another fight. I think that Aldo has all the weapons to beat Pettis. I don’t see many advantages for Pettis in this match-up.”

So, the saga to get a UFC “Super Fight” signed, sealed and delivered continues. What would you prefer to see Penn Nation, Aldo move up to 155 to challenge Pettis for the lightweight belt? Or a catchweight bout between the pair of division rulers? Sound off!
