Nurmagomedov breaks down WSOF 22 brawl with Diaz brothers
Moments before Ronda Rousey took center stage in Brazil at “UFC 190”, chaos was unfolding in Las Vegas, Nevada at “WSOF 22: Palhares vs. Shields” outside of the decagon.
Khabib Nurmagomedov and his crew attended the World Series of Fighting event and eventually ran into Nate Diaz and Nick Diaz who were in attendance to support Jake Shields. The two crews got into an altercation in the crowd and strikes were thrown, but officials separated things before it got too serious.
Nurmagomedov explained to MMA Junkie how the brawl played out. “You know, fights happen between men. It’s OK. It’s normal. Sometimes it happens. But you know what? I’m a professional fighter. I’m a UFC fighter. I’m here at a very big show in Las Vegas. Lot of people here. Lot of women here. Lot of kids here.”
World Series of Fighting aired their card on NBC Sports Network and executives were there live to see the event in person. Even though the fight between Nurmagomedov and Diaz’s crews was not aired on TV, the brawl created for a not-so-family-friendly atmosphere.
“And I can’t fight. I can’t fight. And these guys are beginning to go like crazy with me. But I said, ‘Khabib, you need to stay (calm),'” Nurmagomedov continued. After the first brawl settled down, another brawl broke out in the lobby that saw Nurmagomedov finally get in the mix.
“When he began the second time, I went crazy too.” Nurmagomedov confessed. ”I have to protect myself… It’s OK. This happened between a few men, a few fighters. In the gym, a lot of times that happens.”
Even though there were a lot of people in attendance at the World Series of Fighting event, Nurmagomedov stated he was simply protecting himself from the Diaz brothers’ crew.
“But I know I’m talking about this too much, but for me, it’s normal. For me, it’s normal. But I know I’m a professional fighter. I’m a UFC fighter. I cannot fight when there are a lot of people here. But when somebody begins fighting with me, I need to protect myself.”
