On This Day: Jose Aldo begins his climb to pound-for-pound king
Ten years ago today, Jose Aldo tasted defeat for the first time in his professional mixed martial arts career. Going into his eighth professional career fight, “Scarface” was undefeated in his first seven bouts, finishing all of his opponents in the first round.
Aldo took on Luciano Azevedo on November 26, 2005, at Jungle Fight 5 in Brazil and Azevedo has been the only man to ever hand a loss to the current UFC featherweight champion who took two rounds to secure a rear-naked choke on Aldo.
Since losing to Azevedo, Aldo would go on to win the WEC featherweight championship and UFC featherweight championship belts. Aldo who is the UFC ranked pound-for-pound king has been on a ten-year, 18-fight win streak, having his hand raised in every bout since having fought Azevedo.
Jose Aldo will look to extend his 10-year winning streak in a UFC featherweight unification bout with interim champion Conor McGregor at UFC 194 on Dec. 12 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Will Aldo be able to go on and extend his decade-long destruction of opponents? Or does Conor McGregor hold the key to dethroning Aldo?
