It hasn’t been since former reigning champ BJ Penn has there been such a buzz about the lighter divisions. Penn held the reign for a record 812 days before he lost the title. Rafael dos Anjos has 300 plus days and counting until he puts those numbers to the test against featherweight champ Conor McGregor come UFC 197 in March in a champion vs champion tilt. McGregor has made plans after he’s defeated dos Anjos moving forward with both titles.

While this problem certainly stretches across sports other than MMA and boxing, there’s no denying the damage fighters sustain during the course of their careers.

Recently, the often soft spoken Fabricio Werdum found himself under fire from UFC middleweight champion Luke Rockhold. The animosity from Rockhold likely stems from the fact that Werdum defeated Cain Velasquez, Rockhold’s teammate, for the UFC heavyweight championship last year. At UFC 196 on February 6th Velasquez will get the chance to reclaim his championship belt.

While Eddie Alvarez may only have two UFC fights, ahead of his ‘UFC FN: Boston’ scrap against Anthony Pettis on Sunday, he believes that there’s something ‘convenient’ about Conor McGregor’s timing to move up to lightweight. After his 13 second KO win over Jose Aldo at UFC 194, it was revealed that McGregor would go up to lightweight to fight Rafael Dos Anjos for the UFC lightweight championship at UFC 197 in March rather than defend the featherweight championship.
