Chuck Liddell Tells Fighters To Stop Playing It Safe If They Want More Money

“The fighters probably aren’t going to like me for this one but my biggest problem is guys playing it safe. I understand it from a coach’s standpoint and a manager’s standpoint, I understand why you want to play it safe and win every fight. I get it. But do I want to go watch a guy beat a guy for four rounds and then in the fifth round not do anything? You want to be worth more? Go out and fight. Have fun. Knock people out. Submit them. Beat them. I don’t care. Just try and finish a fight… That’s one of the reasons I retired. If you stuck around the way I was fighting I would have had to start playing it safe. I went out on my shield and that’s the way I liked it. I fought that way my whole career and I didn’t want to bore people for my last three of four fights.” In a recent interview with AXS TV’s Inside MMA, the man who put the UFC on the map, Chuck Liddell, gave his take on the current state of Mixed Martial Arts.

When Renan Barao faced off and defeated Urijah Faber at UFC 149 he was crowned the UFC’s interim bantamweight champion in the absence of the injured Dominick Cruz. He has since had one successful title defense against Michael McDonald in the year he has held the interim title and apparently that’s enough for the Brazilian place holder to consider himself the real undisputed champion of the world.

Maggie: Last Monday on an SI Now panel we discussed the shocking upset in the UFC title fight between Anderson Silva and Chris Weidman. As we often do on SI Now, and based on the panelists we had that day, the panel focused on a broader conversation than Just MMA and we discussed the possibility of fight fixing in combat sports in general. Now one panelist did mistakenly say that boxing was more regulated than MMA, but in the end all the panelists agreed that the particular fight in question was not fixed. Regardless, UFC president Dana White who has a well earned reputation for throwing verbal bombs of his own took public issue with some of the remarks on this program. We invited Dana on to discuss the issue, giving him a platform to share his concerns deirectly to us and true to form he pulled no punches. After sparring a few rounds, no one tapped out, we moved on discussing the rematch between weidman and silva. …

Any fighter at this level is dangerous. You have to respect them all and train very hard. That is what we have been doing for this fight. Because of that, I think things will go well for this fight. Maybe people dont give (Jung) the credit he deserves. But the fact he reached this point and is fighting for the belt really means a lot. It means he has to be respected and because of that I will train hard to be ready for him.
