Pat Healy Discusses Failed Drug Test Post-UFC 159
A great story of Strikeforce import Pat Healy beating perennial UFC top-contender Jim Miller (whilst nabbing two fight bonuses for both ‘Fight of the Night’ and ‘Submission of the Night’) became an unfortunate one as Healy failed his post-fight drug test for marijuana.
The dual bonuses added up to $130,000 and were both stripped from Healy upon news of the failed test.
Recently, Healy spoke with Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour about his failed test.
In the interview, Healy explains his decision and gives details on the situation:
“I felt like it was going to come out regardless. If they weren’t going to announce what it was for, it was going to come out that I had failed a drug test for an unknown substance. I’d rather be honest about the whole situation than let a bunch of false information or wrong information get out there and make me look even worse.”
Healy also told Helwani how far out from the event he smoked:
“It was about three and a half or four weeks out. It was at a friend’s birthday party, just hanging out. To be honest, I didn’t even think it would be an issue. It was a huge mistake and I wish I could go back in time and slap myself because it was just a dumb thing to do.”
The ‘Submission of the Night’ bonus was given to Bryan Caraway, much to the dismay of UFC lightweight Nate Diaz who came out with criticism of Caraway, which got him suspended for 90-days.
Here, Healy apologizes for any trouble he had caused for either fighter:
“I feel bad that my poor choices brought more trouble for anybody, Caraway and Nate.”
Healy now faces a 90-day suspension for the failed test. The suspension is retro-active and has an official start date of when the test was administered.
