Randy Couture does not think Conor McGregor can become his own promotion entity with the UFC

Conor McGregor is undoubtedly one of the biggest draws in the UFC. The record-breaking Irishman has gone on record to say that he was negotiating a contract deal worth over $100 million with the UFC. Even UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta believes that “The Notorious will be the company’s first fighter to hit $100 million.

Talks of McGregor becoming his own promotion entity and working with the UFC have also been rumored. Former UFC champion Randy Couture says that may be too far fetched, even for one of the UFC’s biggest stars.

Couture spoke with Submission Radio on the issues of co-promotion with the UFC (transcribed by Bloody Elbow):

“Well I know that was a huge stumbling block with Fedor and trying to sign Fedor, back when I was pursuing that fight specifically as a contracted fighter with the UFC and that was the fight that I told them that I wanted,” Couture told Submission Radio. “I was ranked number two in the world; he was ranked number one in the world at the time. I know they negotiated with him for a long time, but M-1 Global wanted to do co-promotion, and they were kind of handling and managing, representing Fedor. And that was a stumbling block. They were like, ‘no we’re not going to put anybody else over. We don’t need another promotion, we don’t need a co-promotion, we’re the UFC and that’s it’.

“I would be very surprised if that happens. I would be interested to hear that conversation and how that would get by.”

What are your thoughts on McGregor becoming his own promotion entity? Does he have enough star power to do such a thing with the UFC?
