Stann to Rousey: ‘Kick someone else’s butt, then fight Holm’
After the once thought unbeatable Ronda Rousey was dismantled by the new UFC women’s bantamweight champion Holly Holm, Dana White said that a rematch between the two would makes sense.
However, there have been multiple UFC veterans that disagree with White. From UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier, to former contender Chael Sonnen. Now former WEC light heavyweight champion Brian Stann, who recently spoke with the MMA Hour added to those advising Rousey get more work in before attempting to rematch Holm (transcribed by MMA Mania):
“In my opinion, yes. I think it would be better for her (to take another fight before rematch). You want to fight the biggest fights in your career when you are in a rhythm and have confidence, things are going well with your support network; your trainers and you’re in that right moment. For Holly, it was that time. She’s got a great strong family around her, she’s got a whole community in Albuquerque around her, coaching staff, teammates focused on her. Ronda’s life is more complicated because she’s been the biggest star we have ever seen in the sport. And that’s difficult, you know? So, if I’m her trainer, I know it’s not the best move financially and not what the organization wants, but I would want that. I would want her to work out some kinks and prepare a little bit more for what people think now can defeat her and go into that fight where she is hungry and she is focused. From my view. If I was her trainer, I’d rather have her kick somebody’s butt and then fight Holly with her confidence and swagger.”
With Rousey’s announced plans of taking some time off from fighting, a rematch with Holm could potentially be at UFC 200 in July 2016. Fans would probably rather see Holm in action to display more of her world-class skills in the Octagon sooner than that, so perhaps one fight for Rousey and some time to work on her game ahead of their potential rematch is written in the stars.
