UFC 169 Will Move to Sunday if Severe Weather Shifts Super Bowl to Saturday
There has been speculation that the threat of severe weather could cause a change of date in regards to this weekend’s scheduled Super Bowl game between the Seattle Seahawks and Denver Broncos, which is set to go down Sunday Feb. 2 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.
With that said, the UFC is already creating a game-plan so that it will not have to go head-to-head with the juggernaut that is the NFL.
Following the “UFC on FOX 10” event this past Saturday in Chicago, UFC officials announced that if the Super Bowl were to be moved from Sunday Feb. 2, to Saturday Feb. 1, the organization would then alter the date of UFC 169 from Saturday to Sunday evening.
“We’re keeping an eye on what happens with the Super Bowl in the event of bad weather. We’re coming up with a contingency plan as a result. If and only if they move the Super Bowl to Saturday, we will move UFC 169 to Sunday,” said Dave Sholler, UFC Senior Director of Public Relations.
He continued:
“It obviously requires a lot of coordination with the venue, the fighters, and our TV production crews around the world. So, again, we will be monitoring the situation closely. We will only make the change should the Super Bowl move.”
UFC 169 is scheduled to take place Saturday February 1st at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. The event features 2 title fights, as Bantamweight champion Renan Barao defends his belt against Urijah Faber for a second time, while Featherweight champion Jose Aldo takes on surging contender Ricardo Lamas.
The current forecast for Sunday’s potential Super Bowl isn’t as bad as earlier predictions, while snow isn’t in the forecast (yet), temperatures are still expected to slip below freezing.
