UFC GM: I Want ‘Brazilian Killer’ Chris Weidman to Fight in Brazil
Chris Weidman is no stranger to beating down on some Brazilians in the octagon. Weidman has defeated the likes of Lyoto Machida, Anderson Silva (TWICE), Demian Maia and most recently Vitor Belfort. For somebody who just gained his black belt months ago, that’s not a bad track record against some of the top grapplers in the world.
Weidman is slated to face top ranked middleweight Luke Rockhold next in a venue and on a date that have yet to be determined.
However, if Weidman makes it out of that fight with the gold then UFC General Manager Giovani Decker wants his next defense to take place in Brazil. “Chris Weidman against Vitor, or Lyoto, or Anderson, or ‘Jacare’ at a sold-out Maracana,” Decker said during a recent media scrum for UFC 190. “It would be the ‘Brazilian Killer’ feeling how is it like to fight at Maracana. Why not?”
Maracana is a stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil which has a capacity of 78,838. In 1950, the attendance record was set when Uruguay played Brazil in front of 199,850 fans!
“If Lyoto beats Romero, he’s back in the line, and we’ll see what happens with Anderson, and we can’t forget about Thales Leites. It’s a division full of Brazilians. We have to recognize that Weidman is a phenom, but a sold-out Maracana would be tough for him,” Decker stated.
Do you think Machida should be back in talks for the title with a win over Romero? Will “Jacare” be next in line? Share your thoughts in the comment section below!
