Werdum: ‘Win Over Velasquez Tops Beating Fedor in Strikeforce’
After his dominant victory last night over Cain Velasquez at “UFC 188”, the argument could be made that Fabricio Werdum is the greatest heavyweight in mixed martial arts history.
Velasquez, without a doubt, has been the most dominant heavyweight in the octagon since Randy Couture. His performances over Junior dos Santos and Antonio Silva were some of the most one-sided championship fights ever. Werdum’s track record speaks for itself, however, and now that he sports UFC gold it’s hard to deny the facts.
Werdum says his victory on Saturday night is greater than his win over Fedor Emelianenko in June 2010.
“For sure when I fought Fedor in 2010, it was an amazing fight,” Werdum said during the post fight press conference. “Nobody believed in myself, again. But this moment is the best moment of my life. The best in the world is the UFC heavyweight champion, so I’m very happy.”
Just like when he walked into the cage to fight Fedor, Werdum was again the underdog against Velasquez. Superior conditioning and selective striking brought out an amazing performance from Werdum and his hands were raised before Velasquez could even get into second gear.
Granted Velasquez’s conditioning was hindered by the altitude, it would have been interesting to see the fight go down on American soil. Who do you think would have won if the fight took place in Las Vegas? Share your thoughts in the comment section below!
