Canelo Alvarez signs record-breaking $365 million deal with DAZN

Canelo Alvarez has signed a $365 million deal with streaming service DAZN, per the LA Times. This mammoth deal, which will span 5 years and 10 fights, is being called “the highest paid guaranteed contract in sports history” by Canelo’s promoter Golden Boy Promotions. Canelo’s first fight on DAZN will occur on December 15, when he battles Rocky Fielding inside Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Another top fighter has failed a drug test, but this time in the boxing world. One of the top pound-4-pound current best, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez has reportedly tested positive for the banned substance clenbuterol, according to the LA Times. Canelo is just two months out from his big rematch with his fellow top pound-4-pound boxer, Gennady Golovkin. The two first fought to a controversial draw back in September.

Among casual combat sports fans, Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin’s September 16 boxing match didn’t generate quite the same tidal wave of hype as Floyd Mayweather’s battles with Conor McGregor and Manny Pacquiao. It did, however, manage some serious financial success all the same. According to a report from Jake Donovan on Twitter, Canelo-GGG set the third-highest live gate for Las Vegas at $27,059,850 from 17,318 tickets sold. Though Donovan’s original Tweet suggested the fight did the second-highest gate, he later corrected himself, admitting he forgot that Mayweather vs. McGregor had stolen the second-spot on the yet un-updated list.

Over the weekend, combat sports headlines were dominated by a blockbuster boxing match between stars Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin, which resulted in a thrilling – if debatable – split draw. Unfortunately, many of the headlines that emerged post-fight were negative. Many of those negative headlines surrounded a truly baffling score from ring-side judge Adalaide Byrd, who scored the fight 118-110 for Canelo. In the wake of this logic defying score, NSAC executive director Bob Bennett, who oversaw the Canelo-GGG fight, admitted that Byrd might need a “small break” from judging big fights.

While this latter fight is the one that’s got diehard boxing fans most excited, however, it doesn’t really do much for McGregor. In fact, the Irish star finds both Canelo and ‘GGG’ pretty underwhelming.

Over the weekend, Mexican star Saul “Canelo” Alvarez picked up a dominant decision win over rival Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. While this fight was not particularly thrilling, the aftermath of it absolutely was, as it was announced that Canelo would next step into the ring with Kazakh star Gennady “GGG” Golovkin. The two talents will collide on September 16 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The fight stands out as perhaps the biggest and most important that can currently be made in boxing – though a certain Irishman would argue otherwise. Though this fight is still months away, the early odds for it have already been released. As most boxing fans probably expected, GGG has been installed as a slight favorite over his Mexican foe.
