Report | Canelo-GGG did one of the best live gates ever for Las Vegas

Tom Taylor - September 27, 2017

Among casual combat sports fans, Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin’s September 16 boxing match didn’t generate quite the same tidal wave of hype as Floyd Mayweather’s battles with Conor McGregor and Manny Pacquiao. It did, however, manage some serious financial success all the same. According to a report from Jake Donovan on Twitter, Canelo-GGG set the third-highest live gate for Las Vegas at $27,059,850 from 17,318 tickets sold. Though Donovan’s original Tweet suggested the fight did the second-highest gate, he later corrected himself, admitting he forgot that Mayweather vs. McGregor had stolen the second-spot on the yet un-updated list.

Conor McGregor explains why he's not impressed by Canelo or GGG

Tom Taylor - August 16, 2017

On August 26, UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor will step into the boxing ring with undefeated pugilist Floyd Mayweather in a contest being hailed as “the biggest fight in combat sports history.” In the eyes of many boxing purists, though, it’s more of a freak show. In their eyes, the real super fight occurs on September 16, when Kazakh juggernaut Gennady Golovkin will step through the ropes to battle Mexican destroyer Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez. While this latter fight is the one that’s got diehard boxing fans most excited, however, it doesn’t really do much for McGregor. In fact, the Irish star finds both Canelo and ‘GGG’ pretty underwhelming.

Odds! Gennady "GGG" Golovkin opens as favorite over "Canelo" Alvarez

Tom Taylor - May 8, 2017

Over the weekend, Mexican star Saul “Canelo” Alvarez picked up a dominant decision win over rival Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. While this fight was not particularly thrilling, the aftermath of it absolutely was, as it was announced that Canelo would next step into the ring with Kazakh star Gennady “GGG” Golovkin. The two talents will collide on September 16 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The fight stands out as perhaps the biggest and most important that can currently be made in boxing – though a certain Irishman would argue otherwise. Though this fight is still months away, the early odds for it have already been released. As most boxing fans probably expected, GGG has been installed as a slight favorite over his Mexican foe.
