Middleweight boxing champ Gennady Golovkin put on a show Friday night, stopping Kamil Szeremeta in the seventh round due to referee stoppage. Golovkin, one of the top-10 ranked pound-for-pound boxers in the world, took on Szeremeta at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida. As expected, Golovkin put on a spectacular performance against an overmatched opponent. Golovkin scored four knockdowns en route to the referee stopping the fight due to TKO. With the win, Golovkin improved his professional boxing record to 41-1-1.

Some exciting news from the boxing world: According to a report from Lance Pugmire of The Athletic, Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin “have verbally agreed on financial terms to stage their trilogy fight.” According to The Athletic’s report, Canelo still intends to battle Billy Joe Saunders in a super middleweight unification bout in his next fight. The showdown with Golovkin is expected to follow thereafter, most likely on September 12 at AT&T Stadium outside Dallas, Texas.

Among casual combat sports fans, Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin’s September 16 boxing match didn’t generate quite the same tidal wave of hype as Floyd Mayweather’s battles with Conor McGregor and Manny Pacquiao. It did, however, manage some serious financial success all the same. According to a report from Jake Donovan on Twitter, Canelo-GGG set the third-highest live gate for Las Vegas at $27,059,850 from 17,318 tickets sold. Though Donovan’s original Tweet suggested the fight did the second-highest gate, he later corrected himself, admitting he forgot that Mayweather vs. McGregor had stolen the second-spot on the yet un-updated list.

Unfortunately, many of the headlines that emerged post-fight were negative. Many of those negative headlines surrounded a truly baffling score from ring-side judge Adalaide Byrd, who scored the fight 118-110 for Canelo.
