UFC 213’s Alistair Overeem survives “huge explosion” next to hotel room
This Saturday, on the main card of UFC 213, former Strikeforce, Dream and K-1 champion Alistair Overeem will attempt to even a 1-1 score with former UFC heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum. From the sounds of it, however, Overeem’s plans could have changed significantly on Monday afternoon.
According to a post on Twitter (which included some harrowing pictures), the former champion endured a “huge explosion” which occurred next to his hotel room. This explosion, which was complete with a “boom and flames” left the UFC 213 heavyweight rattled, but ultimately ok.

Needless to say, this incident looks pretty serious and we’re glad to hear the heavyweight star is ok!
Alistair Overeem and Fabricio Werdum are 1-1 across two previous bouts, with Werdum winning the first by submission, and Overeem winning the second by decision.
Overeem will enter this fight having recently jarred Mark Hunt with a thunderous, third-round knee. This highlight reel win was preceded by a first-round knockout loss to Stipe Miocic, which marked a failed bid to claim the UFC heavyweight title.
Werdum, meanwhile, was last seen in the cage in August, when he defeated Travis Browne by decision for the second time. With this win, he separated himself from a first-round knockout loss to Miocic, which signalled the end of his reign as UFC heavyweight champion.
