Chael Sonnen squared off with Lyoto Machida in a light heavyweight contest at last night’s Bellator 222 event in New York.

Sonnen returned to action for the first time since Bellator 208, where he suffered a first round TKO loss at the hands of Fedor Emelianenko. Prior to that, ‘The American Gangster’ had reeled off back to back wins over MMA legends Quiton Jackson and Wanderlei Silva.

Unfortunately for Chael Sonnen things did not go his way last night against ‘The Dragon’. Machida was able to drop Sonnen with a flying knee in round one and nearly finished the fight. However, the always durable Sonnen survived to see round two, although he may have wished he hadn’t.

In the second frame Machida would connect with another flying knee and this time was able to finish Chael Sonnen off with ground and pound.

Following the disappointing setback, Sonnen announced his retirement from the sport of mixed martial arts.

Chael’s surprise announcement caused a plethora of reactions from fellow fighters on Twitter.

Chael Sonnen finishes his MMA career with a record of 31-17-1. He fought for a UFC title on three different occasions, suffering losses to Anderson Silva (x2) and Jon Jones respectively in those contests.

Shortly following his setback to Lyoto Machida at Bellator 222, Chael Sonnen took to Twitter where he showed that he still has a great sense of humor.

“Still can’t believe he fed the bus a carrot.”
