CM Punk will be making his way back to television as it was announced on Monday that he will be one of 10 athletes set to star in the MTV reality series “The Challenge: Champs vs. Pros.” “The Challenge: Champs vs. Pros will pit 10 of America’s top athletes against familiar faces from the long-running series. NFL star Victor Cruz will host the special six-week event, which premieres on Tuesday, May 16,” according to MTV.

Earlier this month, MMA legend Vitor Belfort was mauled by a younger, faster, Kelvin Gastelum. Many fans took this beatdown as a sign that it was time for the aging legend to retire. Belfort himself, however, said he had one more in him. In his post-fight interview, he said he’d like to fulfil the last fight on his contract, ideally at UFC 112 in Rio de Janeiro in June. Belfort also acknowledged that a step down in competition would be nice, which is fair, but then threw the world a bit of a curve ball by calling out CM Punk – a former pro wrestler who was destroyed by Mickey Gall in his only mixed martial arts bout.

Fight fans very well could see a CM Punk return in 2017, if former WWE champion Phil Brooks gets his way. After dropping a first round submission to Mickey Gall in 2016, Punk was very adamant about stepping into the Octagon for another potential fight. While UFC President Dana White wasn’t initially in favor of the idea, stating that if Punk wanted to have another MMA fight, he should likely do-so outside of the UFC, Punk recently stated that the UFC President has appeared to change his tune, and is now more on-board with the idea:

Seconds into the first round, he was plowed to the mat by his young foe, where he was brutalized with ground and pound, and ultimately, tied up in a rear-naked choke and forced to tap. Since the disastrous UFC debut, there has been much discussion about Punk’s fighting future. There are those that think the heart he displayed against Gall should earn him another shot in the UFC’s Octagon. There are those who believe that any additional Punk fights should occur in a smaller, less mainstream MMA promotion. There are those that just don’t care. And then there’s radio host Jason Ellis, who has recently been gunning for a fight in the Octagon with the pro wrestling veteran.

Phil Brooks, better known by his WWE wrestling name, CM Punk, made his professional mixed martial arts debut at UFC 203 in September. There were some people that were unhappy that the former WWE wrestling superstar seemingly strolled his way into the biggest MMA promotion in the world while others were happy to have the star bring in some new fans over to watch the sport of mixed martial arts.

This weekend, welterweight prospect Mickey Gall will take on the biggest test of his UFC career – arguably the first real test of his UFC career – in fellow prospect Sage Northcutt. The two young guns will share the co-main event of UFC on Fox 22, which will emanate from sunny Sacramento, California. Gall’s last fight, of course, was a big one, but not a particularly difficult one. On the main card of UFC 203, he served as the MMA welcoming committee for former WWE star CM Punk, who had precisely zero combat sports experience leading into their fight. As expected, Gall dominated his outmatched foe to a first-round submission win.

There have been many hating on the fact that CM Punk was able to fight for the biggest mixed martial arts promotion in the world for his first fight on account of his success and stardom from professional wrestling. Then on the opposite end of the spectrum, there are those that have welcomed the former WWE star to the Octagon knowing it would bring new fans over to the sport of mixed martial arts.

Punk, who had been signed to the UFC for nearly two years prior to actually stepping into the cage, had been training under famed coach Duke Roufus at Roufusport in Milwaukee alongside the likes of the Pettis brothers, and UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley, to name just a few fighters who train at Roufusport.

Given that he began his journey to the UFC with precisely zero real martial arts experience, this was not especially surprising.

After making a reckless charge across the canvas and whiffing a punch over the top of his foe’s head, he was easily taken down. From there, he was battered and bruised by ground strikes, and ultimately, forced to tap out to a rear-naked choke.

Chael Sonnen may have some insider knowledge on if CM Punk will fight again. On Monday’s MMA Hour, ‘The American Gangster’ said he has talked to Punk every day following his UFC 203 loss to Mickey Gall, and believes we may have not seen the last of CM Punk in MMA. “I’ve talked to Punk every day since. He lost that fight on Saturday and was already back in gym that Monday. He wants to fight. This is what he wants to do. He’s got that skill set.”
