The latest recipient of UFC interim welterweight champion Colby Covington’s venomous trash talk is former UFC welterweight champion Matt Serra, who was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame last night. Covington shared his thoughts on Serra in a multi-Tweet cannonade on Thursday evening.

UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley believes he’s a nightmare matchup for new interim welterweight champion Colby Covington. The champ explained why he feels this way on a recent episode of the UFC Unfiltered podcast, using some of his previous victories as examples. “If [a fighter’s] number one attribute is cardio, they’re up shit creek because cardio is a controllable variable,” Woodley said of Covington’s impeccable cardio (transcribed by Jeff Cain for MMAWeekly.com). “You can’t control that I’m a better wrestler; I’m stronger than you. You can’t control that I punch a shit-load harder than you. You can’t vouch for those things in a six-week training camp. In one year, you can’t change your punching power to be measurable to mine,”

On the latest episode of the MMA Roasted podcast, UFC interim welterweight champion Colby Covington got talking about Brazilian Jiu Jitsu ace turned ONE Championship star Garry Tonon. It should come as no surprise that Covington claimed he could easily defeat Tonon in a grappling match. It did not take long for Tonon to respond to this comment from Covington, and he seems more than happy to let the UFC champ try to prove it.

Today, however, they are perhaps the fiercest rivals in MMA. Woodley, of course, no longer trains at American Top Team. All the same, he believes he still holds some sway at the gym, and is hoping he can get Covington kicked to the curb after they unify their titles.

UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley’s next fight is almost certain to pit him against Colby Covington, the UFC’s new interim welterweight champion. If Woodley and Covington’s fight goes ahead as planned, Woodley is hoping to use it as a chance to punish Covington for the ceaseless trash talk he’s unleashed over the last few months. Rather than taking Covington down, he’s hoping to settle things on the feet. He does not, however, expect Covington to play ball. Instead, he expects the interim champion to lean on his wrestling — the same wrestling he used to defeat Rafael dos Anjos at UFC 225 last weekend.

Shortly after he won the UFC interim welterweight title with a unanimous decision defeat of Rafael dos Anjos, Colby Covington joined a panel of Karyn Bryant, Michelle Waterson, Kenny Florian and Michael Bisping on the FS1 UFC 225 post-fight show. While the new champ probably expected a few typical post-fight questions, what he got instead was some serious hostility from Bisping.

Colby Covington is now the UFC interim welterweight champion — though he assures he’s actually the undisputed champion. Covington earned this lofty title with a hard-fought decision victory over former UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos in the co-main of UFC 225 on Saturday night. Though Covington is one of the most controversial and villainous figures in mixed martial arts today, his victory was impressive enough that even some of his biggest haters were applauding him. Then again, some members of the MMA community stuck to their guns, trashing the notorious heel even in the wake of his title win.
