Conor McGregor gives update on Floyd Mayweather fight schedule
The boxing match between undefeated legend Floyd Mayweather and UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor seems to be getting closer and closer to becoming a reality.
On St. Patrick’s Day, “The Notorious” was in New York at Madison Square Garden as he walked out fellow Irishman Michael Conlan for his professional boxing debut. McGregor made a bit of time and spoke with the media, including an exclusive with the Los Angeles Times on the superfight between the two sport’s biggest stars.
McGregor was showered with cheers from fans as he made his way out with Conlan. This is something “The Notorious” is surely used to these days but this time it was at a boxing event.
“It ain’t the boxing crowd. It ain’t the MMA crowd,” said McGregor. “It’s the Irish fighting crowd and they … love this.”
McGregor said that he is more than ready to step into the boxing ring and people will be in for a shock when his fight finally takes place.
“I’m ready to box,” McGregor said. “I’ve been ready for a long time. The game’s going to be in shock when I step in the ring. Trust me on that.”
McGregor was seen and heard shouting advice to Conlan during the bout, where he stopped Timothy Ibarra in the third round. McGregor’s knowledge purely in the sport of boxing was brought up.
“You’re … right, I know what I was doing,” he said. “Listen, man, I’ve been doing this my whole life.”
With nothing officially announced yet for a fight between Mayweather and McGregor, it sounds like the fight may take place later this year as UFC President Dana White now seems to be on board with the whole idea.
“[September] is what I’m thinking. That’s what the word is,” McGregor stated. “That’s what we’re close to doing.
“I’ve tried to talk to Floyd. I flew to Las Vegas to have talks with Floyd and then he retired. He just doesn’t want to see me. He’s petrified. Wouldn’t you be? No one knows what to expect with me, and they shouldn’t.
“Because I don’t know what to expect either.”
