Floyd Mayweather makes Conor McGregor boxing match offer
The ongoing storyline of a Conor McGregor boxing match with Floyd Mayweather continues this week.
Leading up to Conor McGregor‘s UFC 205 scrap with Eddie Alvarez in November, where the Irish superstar captured the UFC lightweight championship, becoming the first ever simultaneous two-division UFC champion, and the third man in UFC history to hold championship belts in two weight classes, McGregor mentioned that if he were to emerge from the scrap victorious, he very well could be looking at moving to boxing for a superfight with Floyd Mayweather.
On the heels of McGregor’s dominant win over Alvarez, both he and Mayweather continued to trade verbal jabs in the media. Despite McGregor receiving his boxing license in California, no contracts were issued, and it appeared as though the fight would slip through the fingers of combat sports enthusiasts.
Now, in a surprising turn of events, Mayweather has made McGregor a fight offer through an interview with ESPN’s First Take, saying:
“You guys keep hearing all these different rumors about different fighters want to face Floyd Mayweather,” he said. “Everybody keeps talking about Conor McGregor. He’s blowing smoke up everybody’s a–. Dana White, the UFC — let’s make it happen. Bring him over to the boxing world, and I’ll show him what it’s like.”
“We tried to make the Conor McGregor fight,” Mayweather said. “They know what my number is. My number is a guaranteed $100 million. That was my number.
“We are willing to give him $15 million and then we can talk about splitting the percentage — the back end — on the pay-per-view. But of course, we’re the ‘A side.’ How can a guy talk about making 20 or 30 million if he has never made 8 or 9 million in a fight.”
While Mayweather is of course currently retired, with all the talks of a potential boxing match with McGregor, many are wondering if the undefeated boxing icon is fully prepared to return to the ring:
“Only thing I’m probably interested in is the Conor McGregor fight,” Mayweather said. “I’m a businessman, and it makes business sense. I believe in what me and [adviser] Al Haymon talk about every day — I believe in working smarter, not harder.”
