Floyd Mayweather wants to beat McGregor “for all the blacks around the world”

By Tom Taylor - August 9, 2017

Last month, during Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor‘s international press tour, McGregor made a few questionable remarks, several of which were deemed to be racist. The most controversial of McGregor’s remarks occurred during a backstage interview with Jimmy Kimmel Live, when he was asked about the film Rocky 3 – in which Rocky trains at an all-black gym – and referred to it as the one with all the “dancing monkeys in the gym.”

Speaking to ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith earlier this week, Mayweather once again addressed these questionable comments from his upcoming opponent.

“I just didn’t like when he called us monkeys,” Mayweather said (h/t MMAFighting.com). “I think that was totally disrespect. … He called us monkeys. I didn’t like it. It didn’t push a button to make me jump out of my character and go crazy, but I didn’t like it.”

Mayweather then said that he’ll be fighting for the black community when he steps into the ring with McGregor on August 26.

“I just thought about all our different leaders,” he said. “Martin Luther King, Malcolm X. They went on the front line for me and my family and all my loved ones. Like I said before, this stuff still goes on. But I’m strong, I’m smart, patient. And come August 26, I’ll be the same person — smart, strong, patient. And the same way he called us monkeys, we’re gonna see if he say that August 26.”

McGregor’s thoughts on all these racism accusations, of course, have been made quite clear.

“You can be fooled by him if you want to be fooled by him,” The Irishman said during the press tour, beforee referencing the domestic abuse scandal in Mayweather’s past. “You know the man’s character, you know his history. He’s trying to sway the people in his favor. I think it was a cheap, little [play]. … I was trying to address something in my own little way. But whatever. It is what it is. I had fun with it last night. If he feels disrespected, well he’s an idiot and then fuck him as well.”
