Ringside Doctors Caution That Glove Change for Mayweather vs. McGregor Could be Too Dangerous

By Justin Golightly - August 15, 2017

Don’t worry guys, Conor McGregor will fight Floyd Mayweather in a couple of weeks and we can put this whole thing to rest. Well, until McGregor decides to give Paul Malignaggi and himself a mutual red panty night in the boxing ring. One of the latest things to swirl around in the chaotic either besides those wild knockdown clip takes, is the possibility that there will be a change in glove size for the May/Mac bout. The parties involved are supposed to meet tomorrow to see if the gloves will be 10oz or reduced to 8oz, but the Association of Ringside physicians caution against it.

“Unless there is scientific evidence to support the view that such a change might improve the safety of the bout, we should strongly caution against allowing current regulations to be over-ruled. To do so would also set a precedent for future bouts.”

Floyd Mayweather originally requested the bout be at 154lbs so that Conor McGregor would have to wear the 10oz gloves, cushioning his notorious power. The smaller 8oz gloves are usually reserved for boxing matches under 147lbs. Whether Floyd is making a point that he can bear McGregor with the smaller gloves, or he’s just playing mind games, Conor McGregor could very well bring this up as the event draws closer. Think about it, the Association of Ringside Officials worried for the fighter’s safety with 8oz gloves? McGregor will have a field day screaming that he fights in 4oz and has to avoid shin bones and elbow destruction.
