While millions around the world were excited to see what would happen when Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor stepped into the boxing ring, one boxing legend was very upset that the fight was actually taking place.

Oscar De La Hoya wants to fight Conor McGregor

On Friday, a day before the richest fight in combat sports took place, Oscar De La Hoya tweeted, “F**K YOU #MayweatherVsMcGregor BOTH OF YOU ARE DISRESPECTING THE SPORT OF BOXING #CaneloGGG Sept 16th http://www.ringtv.com.”

UFC President Dana White fired back in typical Dana White fashion. The two have gone back and forth on the matter while Dana pointed out that Oscar tried to campaign for a fight between McGregor and his Golden Boy Promotions star Canelo Alvarez just a few months ago.

Despite his disgruntled attitude towards the Mayweather vs McGregor matchup, the fight took place and delivered excitement for fans as McGregor made the bout look competitive. De La Hoya explained the reason for his spiteful tweet on Monday’s episode of The MMA Hour.

“Just trying to defend my sport,” De La Hoya said (transcribed by Marc Raimondi for MMA Fighting). “My sport gave me everything I have. My sport allowed me to win an Olympic gold medal, to win 10 world titles in six different weight classes. I’ve been boxing since I was 4 years old. I was a little fed up by what was taking place. Obviously emotions run through my veins and I was just defending the sport that I dearly love.”

In regards to the beef with White, De La Hoya stated that he just brushed it off and said that he never personally attacked the UFC President with any of his words. The former boxing champion stated he respects the sport of mixed martial arts. De La Hoya said he will continue to defend the sport of boxing and is moving forward with his Canelo vs GGG superfight.

De La Hoya added that he thinks boxers should stick to boxing and MMA fighters should stick to MMA. However, the Golden Boy promoter made sure to throw a comment out that could surely build into another MMA vs boxing matchup down the road.

“After seeing Saturday’s fight, Canelo probably would have knocked him out in one round or two rounds,” De La Hoya said. “Canelo is a knockout guy, he’s a guy who’s not gonna trick people into making a fight last longer than it should last.”
