This past weekend at UFC 209, undefeated lightweight Khabib Nurmagomedov was set to step into the Octagon to fight streaking lightweight Tony Ferguson in a highly anticipated interim lightweight title fight. Unfortunately, after Nurmagomedov was hospitalized the morning of UFC 209 weigh-ins, the UFC was forced to scrap the bout, and pull Tony Ferguson from the fight as well. In addition to crowning the UFC interim lightweight champion, the fight was set to determine who would be the first challenger to Conor McGregor‘s UFC lightweight title.

Frustrated Floyd Mayweather tells Conor McGregor to "sign the paper"
Tom Taylor - March 8, 2017
The biggest ongoing narrative in combat sports today surrounds a potential boxing mega fight between UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor, and semi-retired boxing great Floyd Mayweather Jr. Each week, this prospective showdown seems to generate dozens of new headlines, some suggesting the fight might actually happen, others suggesting it’s a near impossibility. Unsurprisingly, this influx of Mayweather-McGregor stories is starting to grow old for some members of the combat sports community. We know that UFC welterweight Stephen Thompson, for example, is sick and tired of hearing about it – and he’s certainly not alone.

Chael Sonnen discusses what's next for Khabib Nurmagomedov
Tom Taylor - March 6, 2017
Last weekend, the UFC returned to the combat sport mecca of Las Vegas, Nevada, with UFC 209. Unfortunately, it made this Vegas return without its originally planned co-main event: an interim lightweight title fight between undefeated Dagestani star Khabib Nurmagomedov, and streaking American contender Tony Ferguson. This fight was cancelled on the eve of battle, when Nurmagomedov was hospitalized, and unable to weigh in for battle as a result. With this unfortunate twist of fate, many fans have called for a rescheduling of this Nurmagomedov vs. Ferguson bout. According to three-time UFC title challenger, current Bellator star, and polarizing MMA analyst Chael Sonnen, however, this is not likely to be the way things unfold. Instead, he believes Nurmagomedov has likely lost his opportunity to fight for interim lightweight gold, and therefor his chance to fight undisputed lightweight champ Conor McGregor down the road. That opportunity, Sonnen says, will next go to Nate Diaz – McGregor’s biggest rival.

John Kavanagh wants Conor McGregor Nate Diaz trilogy fight
bjpenndotcom - March 2, 2017
UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor may have avenged his UFC 196 loss to Nate Diaz at UFC 202, however the way McGregor’s coach sees it, a trilogy fight between the two when McGregor returns to the Octagon makes sense. With that being said, a fight between Conor McGregor and the winner of this weekend’s UFC 209 co-main event scrap between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson for the interim lightweight championship is a very likely possibility.
