Dana White: Conor McGregor won't be stripped of title

Leading up to Conor McGregor’s UFC 202 rematch with Nate Diaz earlier this month, UFC President Dana White stated that regardless of whether or not McGregor wins or loses, he will be forced to return to featherweight and defend his championship. While McGregor has continued to remain noncommittal in regards to returning to featherweight, UFC President Dana White seems to be confident that McGregor will return to featherweight without the UFC brass having to play hard ball.

Current UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor was awarded a majority decision victory over Nate Diaz in the main event of UFC 202 just over a week ago in Las Vegas. The bout was nothing short of a war and is being dubbed as a “Fight of the year” candidate by most fans and analysts.

It has been just six days since Conor McGregor fought a grueling 5-round war against Nate Diaz in the main event of UFC 202. McGregor, who ultimately was awarded a majority decision win, was filmed backstage after the fight on crutches. When the official medical reports were released following the event, they revealed that McGregor could be sidelined for 6 months if he doesn’t get his left ankle cleared by an orthopedist.

Going into UFC 202, where Conor McGregor hoped to avenge his UFC 196 loss to Nate Diaz, the featherweight champ and SBG Ireland head coach John Kavanagh did something they had never done before. They came up with a gameplan for Diaz. In addition to coming up with a gameplan, McGregor brought in several lanky southpaw boxers, and Jiu-Jitsu ace Dillon Danis to prepare for Diaz. In total, McGregor estimated that his training camp cost $300,000.

At UFC 202 over the weekend, “The Notorious” was able to even up the score with Nate Diaz after a five-round war putting them both with one win against each other. Now with the money fight over, UFC President Dana White said immediately after the fight that McGregor had two options for his next bout. Either defend his featherweight title against interim champion Jose Aldo to unify the belts or face Eddie Alvarez for the lightweight title.

Going into Conor McGregor’s UFC 202 rematch with Nate Diaz, McGregor predicted that he would finish Diaz in the 4th round of their welterweight scrap. McGregor was unable to finish Diaz, however he dropped the Stockton fighter several times early on in the fight. Immediately following the fight, McGregor stated that he would do a trilogy fight with Diaz, however it would be at lightweight, where both men were more comfortable.
