Floyd Mayweather won’t be competing in MMA, but he’s willing to rematch former two-division UFC champ Conor McGregor in the boxing ring. Mayweather and McGregor fought in 2017, in one of the most lucrative boxing matches in history. Mayweather ended up winning the fight with fairly decisive tenth-round TKO.

According to his manager, Ali Abdelaziz, Khabib Nurmagomedov encouraged Justin Gaethje to go fight Conor McGregor next. UFC president Dana White recently revealed that “The Eagle” is taking some time away from the Octagon due to the tragic death off his father, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov. He was expected to return to fighting at UFC 253 on September 19 and defend his belt against the lightweight interim titleholder, Justin Gaethje. White hasn’t ruled out the possibility of the fight but is still waiting for a callback from Nurmagomedov to see where his head is at.

UFC 251 will be headlined by a welterweight title fight between dominating champion Kamaru Usman and streaking challenger Jorge Masvidal. Usman was originally expected to defend his title agains Gilbert Burns, but Masvidal was called to step in on just six days’ notice when Burns tested positive for COVID-19. The card will also feature two other title fights: a featherweight showdown between Alexander Volkanovski and Max Holloway, and a bantamweight battle between Petr Yan and Jose Aldo.

Poirier, who has lost to both McGregor and UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov previously, recently told MMA Junkie that he’d prefer a rematch with the latter over the former—even if there was no belt on the line. He explained that he finds a rematch with Nurmagomedov more alluring than a do-over McGregor because, so far, nobody has been able to beat the lightweight champ.

McGregor knocked out Donald Cerrone at UFC 246 back in January and was expected to be next in line to fight for the UFC lightweight title, but numerous factors went against that from happening. The coronavirus pandemic meant that UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov couldn’t fight Tony Ferguson, and Ferguson instead went on to fight and lose to new interim champ Justin Gaethje at UFC 249. The UFC is now planning on Nurmagomedov vs. Gaethje to unify the lightweight belts at UFC 253 in September.

Abdulmanap died in a Moscow hospital this week, succumbing to COVID-19-related complications. There was an immediate outpouring of condolences and well-wishes from many notable members of the MMA community, all of whom recognize the massive influence Abdulmanap had not only on Khabib but many other fighters in Dagestan.
